Muong Hum market is one of very few markets that still retains the features of
traditional hill tribef markets in northern Vietnam. Muong Hum market often hold
on every Sunday on open flat land at the bottom of a large and beautiful valley
by a small river and terraced rice paddies surrounding. This is known as a large
and important market in the northwest region as well as one
of the most interesting Sunday market in
Lao Cai province.
It is very different from Sapa and
Bac Ha market which you can easily visit if
you visit Sapa, because they are held inside the district townships, but
Muong Hum Market is not. On the other weekday, this are is often quiet, but on
Sunday, when the market is opened, it became more crowded and busy withthe very
large variety of the ethnic minority peoples to attend.
It is quite easy to be distinguished which minority they are, just depending on
their traditional clothes. For example, the flower H’mong wear thick embroidered
yellow, red skirts and blouses while the Red H’mong like thinner red embroidered
patterns on light batik background; In contrast, the Black H’mong wear dark
indigo with just some decorative motive at the end of the shirt sleeves and
round the neck. Red Zao and Zao Tuyen wear black trousers and shirts with nice
yellow embroidery motifs and decorative headgears including bells and silver
chains. The clothes of Zay, Tay and Ha Nhi people when they attend the market
are less colorful but no less beautiful. |
