Located 320km northwest of Hanoi, Son La is the third largest province of
Vietnam. The province makes a good stop for travelers on the route from Hanoi to
Dien Bien Phu.
Son La alone is home to 12 ethnic minority groups, notably Black Thai, White
Thai, H'mong and Muong. You can distinguish each of these ethnic minorities from
their traditional costumes, which are often colorful and go with a lot of
accessories. For example, Black Thai women wear black sarongs, and tight-fitting
blouses with rows of silver or metal buttons down the front attached tightly to
the neck.
